VOICE
It’s time for Captain Radio!
[Intro music plays: thrilling, space-y synthesizer.]
NARRATOR
These are the adventures of Captain Radio! Doctor Orban has returned and he has found a way to use Ace to bring his nefarious schemes to fruition. And 74391, a powerful psychic trapped in the body of a terrible explosive, is primed to explode when the Phaeton reaches Alpha Centauri. With our heroes separated in different compartments of the space zeppelin, it seems there may be no way to stop Orban’s plot and save the planet and its moons from being crushed by the graviton fold.
You’re listening to the final installment of Captain Radio and the Search for Alpha Centauri! Chapter Three: Once and For All.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Stand back! I’m going to blast the door open.
ORION
Those are safety doors, designed to close if part of the ship depressurizes. You wouldn’t make a dent.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Then I’ll shoot the control pad.
ORION
You could do that, but then the fail-safe lock would engage and you’d really be stuck.
CAPTAIN RADIO
What would you suggest? I can’t just sit here and do nothing.
ANDROMEDA
Can you override the lock mechanism manually?
CAPTAIN RADIO
Perhaps, but if Ace realizes what I’m doing…
ANDROMEDA
Then we’ll have to keep Ace distracted.
ORION
Leave it to me. I have a plan.
ANDROMEDA
I’ll keep working on 74391, see if I can get him to disarm.
ORION
Uh, Doctor Orban?
EVIL ACE
(Via intercom)
How dare you disturb me. What do you want?
ORION
No disrespect. It’s just that I don’t think I fully grasp the brilliance of your evil plan. Obviously, you went to a lot of trouble to get your revenge. But how exactly did you defeat Captain Radio so masterfully?
EVIL ACE
(Via intercom)
Finally, someone who recognizes my genius. First, I calculated a small but concerning probability that Captain Radio would prevent me from using the Dimension Gate to take over the Imperium. So naturally, I made a backup plan in the unlikely event of my capture.
ORION
Sounds simple enough.
EVIL ACE
(Via intercom)
It was exceedingly complex, I assure you. I saw my opportunity when Captain Radio briefly traveled to the future to destroy the Arcadia Crystal. I seized the chance to capture Lady Andromeda, this infernal ship, and the robot. It was a simple matter of placing graviton fold generators in orbit of Alpha Centauri and installing an activation beacon into the nose of the vessel.
ORION
So if the captain tried to return home, the ship’s approach would trigger the fold. Actually, that’s pretty clever.
EVIL ACE
(Via intercom)
Diabolical, isn’t it?
ORION
What did you need Ace for?
EVIL ACE
(Via intercom)
I reprogrammed the robot with a hidden memory tape that would be activated in the presence of the fold.
ORION
So Ace would think they were Doctor Orban and could carry out the plan without you having to be anywhere near Alpha Centauri.
EVIL ACE
(Via intercom)
I have left nothing to chance. Soon, my final victory will be at hand!
ORION
(To Captain Radio)
How’s it going in there? I don’t know how much longer I can keep him talking.
[The spark of electrical wire.]
CAPTAIN RADIO
Almost… got it!
[The door whooshes.]
ORION
Took you long enough. I could’ve hot-wired that in half the time.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Then you can try the door to the flight deck.
ORION
That door makes the one you just hacked look like child’s play. The flight deck is designed to stay pressurized when the rest of the ship is crippled. It’s got layers of shielding, redundant locks, the works.
CAPTAIN RADIO
You know an awful lot about ship design.
ORION
When you’ve stolen as many ships as I have, you start to learn how they’re put together. And how they fly apart, but that’s not relevant right now.
CAPTAIN RADIO
We need to find a way in if we’re going to retake the ship. Andromeda, any luck with our friend?
ANDROMEDA
74391 insists on being stubborn.
ORION
Must be a family trait.
ANDROMEDA
Watch it.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Maybe I can talk to him.
ANDROMEDA
That would only make it worse. He blames your ancestors for turning him into a weapon. He’s mentioned killing you at least a dozen times since he’s been onboard.
CAPTAIN RADIO
I’m not proud of many of the things that have been done in my name. But that’s in the past. If he knew that we’ve changed—
ANDROMEDA
It’s too late for apologies, Xavier. Five hundred years too late.
CAPTAIN RADIO
I don’t blame him for being angry, but we’ve got to get him on our side. We just have to find something else that he wants besides killing me.
ANDROMEDA
I’ll keep trying.
ORION
And if that doesn’t work? What’s the plan?
CAPTAIN RADIO
We try to make Orban angry. Throw him off balance.
ORION
But that isn’t Doctor Orban. It’s Ace.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Ace doesn’t know that.
ORION
I hope you’re right.
ANDROMEDA
You’ve been awfully quiet, 74391.
74391
I was just thinking about finally fulfilling my purpose. Also, I keep forgetting that you’re real. I’ve had a lot of imaginary friends over the centuries.
ANDROMEDA
It’s not your purpose to be a weapon, you know. That’s what they made you.
73491
It’s the only purpose I have left. My life ended. If I’m not a weapon of mass destruction, then what am I?
ANDROMEDA
I don’t know. What I do know is that a lot of innocent people are going to die if you go through with this.
73491
Innocence is relative.
ANDROMEDA
You sound like Ace sometimes.
74391
Your malfunctioning robot and I aren’t so different. We’re both just impressions on magnetic tape. Though I’m obviously far superior in every other way.
ANDROMEDA
Magnetic tape. Maybe we can use that to our advantage.
74391
Call me when you have a plan. I think I’ll take a nap before showtime.
ANDROMEDA
How does it work, the psychokinetic explosion?
74391
It’s a conventional warhead, if that’s what you mean. But I serve as the guidance system and to focus the brunt of the explosion on the target. If you’re gonna go out, it might as well be in a giant fireball, am I right?
ANDROMEDA
Couldn’t a psychic guide and direct the weapon from a safe distance? Why implant a living mind?
74391
They tried using remote pilots, but the distances were too great. You’d need the galaxy’s most powerful psychic to reach the target intact.
ANDROMEDA
I see. I need to talk to Xavier. Don’t detonate until I get back.
74391
I make no guarantees, sis.
[The sound of tools, screwdrivers and pliers disassembling a control panel.]
ANDROMEDA
Any progress on the door?
CAPTAIN RADIO
It’s still locked. Every time I get close to cracking it, Ace changes the combination. So, instead, I’m trying to create another distraction.
ANDROMEDA
What did you have in mind?
CAPTAIN RADIO
I’ve sent Orion down to the cargo hold to start rummaging around. Hopefully that draws Ace’s attention.
ANDROMEDA
Xavier, when were you going to tell me about Queen Nashira’s proposal?
CAPTAIN RADIO
How did you know about that?
ANDROMEDA
So it’s true.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Can we talk about this later?
ANDROMEDA
In fifteen minutes, we’ll be at the center of a massive psychokinetic explosion. This might be the only chance we have.
(Captain Radio sighs.)
CAPTAIN RADIO
I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to hurt you.
ANDROMEDA
Because you were thinking of accepting?
CAPTAIN RADIO
I don’t want to. And yet…
ANDROMEDA
There’s a part of you that feels like it’s your duty to say yes.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Exactly. I have turned my back on duty to chase adventure across the stars. I wasn’t here when Alpha Centauri needed me.
ANDROMEDA
You’ve also done a lot of good for countless planets across the galaxy.
CAPTAIN RADIO
That’s the dilemma.
ANDROMEDA
If you want to be with Nashira, if you want to be king… I won’t stand in your way.
CAPTAIN RADIO
And if I want to be with you?
ANDROMEDA
Then I’ll be right by your side. Whatever you decide, I’ll understand.
CAPTAIN RADIO
I don’t deserve you, Andromeda.
[A burst of static as Evil Ace comes over the intercom.]
EVIL ACE
(via intercom)
Attention, prisoners. I don’t appreciate you plotting behind my back. I detected the Taurian scuttling around in the cargo hold. I’ve sealed him in and I’m going to open the airlock unless you surrender.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Let him go!
EVIL ACE
(Via intercom)
I’ll give you five seconds. One. Two.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Alright. Alright. You win, Orban.
EVIL ACE
(Via intercom)
And what exactly are you willing to trade me for his life?
CAPTAIN RADIO
Let Orion go and I’ll hang up my mask. I’ll retire Captain Radio once and for all. We won’t cause any more trouble for you.
[Evil Ace chuckles.]
EVIL ACE
(Via intercom)
That wasn’t so hard, was it? I’ve released the seal on the cargo hold.
[Door whoosh.]
ORION
(His breathing ragged.)
That was a little too close for comfort.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Well done, Orion. I’ve got access to some of the secondary systems.
ANDROMEDA
Anything we can use to get onto the flight deck?
CAPTAIN RADIO
I don’t think so. All I have are atmospheric controls, the electra-wave network, and partial control of the intercom. At least Ace won’t be able to hear us unless we want them to.
ORION
I risked my life for that?
ANDROMEDA
The electra-wave network. I have a plan. But only if 74391 agrees.
CAPTAIN RADIO
What did you have in mind?
ANDROMEDA
We’re going to give Doctor Orban a taste of his own medicine.
[Ominous music transitions us to:]
NEWSCASTER
We interrupt this broadcast for an important news flash: World leaders rally for peace! After a week of secret negotiations, the League of Nations and the Kremlin announced this morning that an agreement has been reached. In exchange for humanitarian aid and the easing of economic sanctions, Stalin has agreed to immediately withdraw Russian troops from Finland and the Baltics. In a stunning turn of events which would have been unimaginable following the Soviet attack on Amelia Earhart’s Electra One capsule, it seems cooler heads have prevailed. The announcement prompted celebration across Europe, from Paris to Moscow, as revelers spilled out into the streets with songs and chants of peace, liberty, and brotherhood for all humanity. For now, it seems another world war has been averted. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.
NARRATOR
As the Phaeton approaches the coordinates where the planet Alpha Centauri is hidden, our heroes plot a desperate attempt to retake the space zeppelin from the clutches of Ace. But with their robot companion subverted by Doctor Orban’s program, it’s anyone’s guess if they will succeed.
CAPTAIN RADIO
All set, Orion?
ORION
I ran Imperium blockades, remember? I once flew between two heavy cruisers parked so close together, I scraped the paint on both sides. So, yeah, I think I can handle this.
CAPTAIN RADIO
This isn’t like any piloting you’ve done before. When the fold reverses, you’re going to have less than a second to dodge an entire planet. There’s no margin for error.
ORION
I thrive under pressure.
CAPTAIN RADIO
74391, how about you?
74391
I think I’ve made it very clear that you’re all insane — and that’s coming from an insane person. Would you like to know the odds that you fail? I did the math. Because I’m basically a genius.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Not particularly.
74391
Eighty-eight point three percent.
CAPTAIN RADIO
I’ve faced worse odds.
74391
Like I said, insane.
ORION
We’re not interested in your analysis. Can you do it?
74391
Andromeda’s plan is theoretically possible. Twelve point seven percent possible, to be precise.
CAPTAIN RADIO
That’s good enough for me. I have faith in you all to pull this off.
ANDROMEDA
Once the transfer is complete, we’ll have to move fast. Ace has backup memory tapes that will kick in as soon as a problem is detected.
ORION
And we have no way of knowing which Ace will turn up.
CAPTAIN RADIO
We’ll be ready for any outcome.
ORION
Are you prepared to destroy Ace?
74391
That’s dark.
ORION
What? Everyone’s thinking it. I’m just the only one willing to say it out loud. For all we know, our Ace is gone. If it comes down to it, Ace or every person on Alpha Centauri, will you be able to pull the plug?
CAPTAIN RADIO
I’m not giving up on Ace yet.
ORION
Okay, so we’re going with blind optimism.
CAPTAIN RADIO
I know Ace. We may not be able to see it, but you can bet they’re putting up a fight. Andromeda, will you be ready to launch the weapon?
ANDROMEDA
I believe so. Orion has been showing me some of the techniques the Monks of the Dark Adaptation use to extend their psychic range. But no one has ever done so over this distance before.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Then I guess you’ll be the first.
ORION
We’re slowing down.
ANDROMEDA
We must be getting close. Are you ready for the transfer?
74391
I can’t believe you want me to trust this Centauri after everything they’ve done to me. To us.
ANDROMEDA
I trust him.
74391
If this doesn’t work, which it won’t, I’m going to die. For real this time.
ORION
Isn’t the alternative death by fiery explosion?
74391
It would have been epic.
ANDROMEDA
This is going to work.
74391
Fine. I guess it’s time to quit being history and finally make some history.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Spinning up electra-wave connection. Transfer in progress.
74391
See you on the other side, corporeals.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Three… two… one… Now!
NARRATOR
Captain Radio throws the switch, sending a shudder through the hull and plunging the ship into darkness.
[A flicker of electricity, a pop of glass and fizzle, then a door whoosh.]
CAPTAIN RADIO
The door is open. You all know what to do.
NARRATOR
As Andromeda and Orion prepare to launch the psychokinetic bomb, Captain Radio climbs the stairs to the flight deck, his ray gun at the ready.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Ace? Are you there?
[Doctor Orban chuckles evilly.]
DOCTOR ORBAN
Did you really think your pathetic attempt would defeat me? This robot is mine. And I will use it to bring one planet after another under my rule. I will —
[The sound of reversing audio tape.]
ACE
Can you hear me, sir?
CAPTAIN RADIO
It’s alright, Ace. I’m here.
ACE
I have been fighting, but he is too strong. I have only gained partial control of my —
[The sound of reversing audio tape. Faster]
74391
Seriously, it is crowded in here! I don’t think this processor was designed to host three minds at once. Woah. Check it out. I have arms!
[The sound of reversing audio tape. Faster.]
DOCTOR ORBAN
What have you done?
CAPTAIN RADIO
We called in some back up.
DOCTOR ORBAN
I can’t think straight with you two babbling on in my head!
CAPTAIN RADIO
It’s over, Doctor Orban. Let Ace go.
[The sound of reversing audio tape.]
EVIL ACE
Never!
NARRATOR
Ace lunges at Captain Radio, knocking the ray gun from his grasp, grabbing him around the neck and lifting him off the floor.
[The clatter of the ray gun across the floor.]
EVIL ACE
Any last words?
CAPTAIN RADIO
(Choking)
Never. Surrender.
EVIL ACE
A fitting end for the great Captain Radio.
[The sound of reversing audio tape.]
74391
Sorry, I don’t want to do this, but I can’t control this arm yet.
[The sound of reversing audio tape.]
ACE
The program is adapting. I only have control of thirteen percent of my functions.
[The sound of reversing audio tape.]
EVIL ACE
You’re too late to save him.
[The sound of reversing audio tape.]
ACE
Statement rejected.
[The sound of reversing audio tape.]
74391
Hang on, let me try something.
[The sound of reversing audio tape.]
EVIL ACE
You’re weak, Ace. A killing machine that refuses to fight? I shall put you to much better use.
[The sound of reversing audio tape.]
ACE
I will not allow you to proceed.
[The sound of reversing audio tape.]
EVIL ACE
You cannot stop me.
[The sound of reversing audio tape.]
ACE
Correct. However, there is one thing I can do.
[The sound of reversing audio tape.]
EVIL ACE
And what is that?
[The sound of reversing audio tape.]
ACE
This.
NARRATOR
Seizing control of their free arm, Ace reaches deep inside their chest cavity, dislodging pumps and gears before ripping out a reel of magnetic tape, which spools out onto the floor. The metal body of the robot grinds to a halt, releasing Captain Radio before collapsing.
[A metallic clang as Ace falls. The intercom beeps.]
ORION
(Via intercom)
Everything alright up there? We’ve got about two minutes left on this detonator, but we’re ready to launch.
CAPTAIN RADIO
(catching his breath)
Do it.
NARRATOR
As the weapon veers off into space, Andromeda forms a psychic connection to guide its deadly payload to the center of the fold.
[The hum of Andromeda’s power.]
ANDROMEDA
Focus, Andromeda. Focus. Breathe. See the stars. Feel the space around the planet. The way it twists, curves, folds. Find the center. There!
NARRATOR
Meanwhile, Orion hurries to the flight deck to pilot them to safety.
[Clang of feet on metal stairs.]
ORION
Is Ace…?
CAPTAIN RADIO
Never mind that now. Get us out of here.
ORION
You got it. Time for some fancy flying.
ACE
Cap. Cap. Captain Radio.
CAPTAIN RADIO
I’m here, old friend. You’ll be good as new in no time. We’ll even get you a new coat of chrome plating.
ACE
Error. Tell Captain Radio. Error.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Go ahead. I can hear you.
ACE
Tell Captain Radio that I did. I did not. Surrender.
CAPTAIN RADIO
I know. You did well.
ACE
To defend the weak. To fight. To fight.
CAPTAIN RADIO
To fight injustice.
ACE
(Their speech slowing down)
Tell Captain Radio. Tell Captain Radio.
ORION
Planet incoming!
[A low boom as the planet reappears.]
ANDROMEDA
There’s no sign of the fold. The explosion dissipated the field.
ORION
Gravity and magnetic fields look normal. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think we did it.
CAPTAIN RADIO
And Proxima? The other moons?
ORION
Right where they’re supposed to be.
ANDROMEDA
I’m sorry about Ace, Xavier. Truly.
CAPTAIN RADIO
They did what had to be done. What I couldn’t.
ORION
Hey cap? You’re gonna want to hear this.
[We hear a flood of voices, overlapping as if we are hearing many radio transmissions at once. Many are calling out for Captain Radio by name: “Calling Captain Radio!” “Please help!” “We are under attack!” “This is Nocturna Major to anyone who can hear this distress call!” Alongside other messages, some clear, some garbled.]
CAPTAIN RADIO
What is it?
ANDROMEDA
It must be all the radio transmissions that were caught in the fold.
ORION
Hundreds of them. And they’re all calling for you.
CAPTAIN RADIO
How can I possibly be expected to answer so many distress calls?
ANDROMEDA
You can’t turn your back on the galaxy now. It’s not what Ace would’ve wanted.
ORION
Getting another one. Priority alpha. It’s Queen Nashira.
QUEEN NASHIRA
(Via radio)
Count Xavier, are you there? Why do you delay? I need your answer immediately.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Andromeda, I —
ANDROMEDA
It’s okay. You have to do what’s best for Alpha Centauri, for the Imperium.
ORION
She’s sent a dozen messages. Should I respond?
CAPTAIN RADIO
Tell her… Tell her I have given her proposal a lot of thought, but I must decline. She has my allegiance as sovereign ruler of the Imperium, nothing more.
ANDROMEDA
What about your duty?
CAPTAIN RADIO
All my life, I have dedicated myself to the greater good. For once, I’m going to follow my heart.
ORION
What should I tell the others?
CAPTAIN RADIO
Let them know… help is on the way.
[Heroic music transitions us to:]
NARRATOR
Don’t touch that dial! Captain Radio and the Search for Alpha Centauri will return after this brief word from our sponsor!
AD ANNOUNCER

DuMont Television — the future is now.
NARRATOR
We now return to the adventures of Captain Radio! With Alpha Centauri returned to its place in the sky, our heroes finally enjoy some much needed respite from their adventures. A few weeks later, Orion visits Captain Radio and Andromeda in the palace to bid them farewell.
CAPTAIN RADIO
How’s the new arm, Orion? You’re welcome to stay as long as you need to recuperate.
ORION
It’ll take some getting used to, but it’ll do.
ANDROMEDA
Are you sure you won’t stay for the wedding, Orion?
ORION
Wish I could, but my transport leaves in an hour. I have a cousin who runs a salvage operation a few parsecs from here. He’s offered me command of one of his ships.
ANDROMEDA
So no more smuggling?
ORION
Never say never. But for now, the wreck of an Acruxian treasure barge is calling my name.
ANDROMEDA
We won’t keep you. But next time you’re on this side of the galaxy, you’d better drop by for old time’s sake.
ORION
So long, love birds. Oh, and tell the rust bucket I said goodbye.
NARRATOR
As Orion heads off for parts unknown, Captain Radio and Andromeda make their way to the robotics workshop in the lower levels of the palace.
ANDROMEDA
Any improvement today?
MACHINIST
Hard to say, ma’am. Ace’s memory tapes were badly corrupted by the incursion. We couldn’t separate the three programs, so we ended up combining them into a new base code.
ANDROMEDA
You mean that Doctor Orban’s program and 74391 are a part of Ace now?
MACHINIST
That’s the idea. But there’s no telling if one personality will dominate the other two or if they’ll blend together. That will take time to hash out.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Will they remember anything?
MACHINIST
The damage was extensive, but there could be residual memory pockets we don’t know about, hidden backup nodes in case of catastrophic failure. These old machines are full of surprises.
ACE
Proximity alert. Intruders.
MACHINIST
It’s alright, Ace. You’ve got visitors.
ACE
Identify.
CAPTAIN RADIO
I’m Count Xavier, but you can call me Captain Radio. This is Countess Andromeda.
ANDROMEDA
We’re your friends.
ACE
Terminology unknown. Define ‘friends.’
CAPTAIN RADIO
You’ll find out soon enough.
ACE
Your name is Captain Radio.
CAPTAIN RADIO
That’s right.
ACE
Captain Radio. Stands against. Injustice?
ANDROMEDA
Did you tell them that?
MACHINIST
No, ma’am.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Surprises, indeed. Keep us posted.
[Steps on marble.]
ANDROMEDA
We’ve still got a few days before my parents arrive from Proxima for the ceremony. I was thinking we could get away to the Lake District for a while and relax, just the two of us.
CAPTAIN RADIO
That sounds perfect. Or we could go on a quick tour of the Rings of Dracos.
ANDROMEDA
That doesn’t sound like a vacation — it sounds like another adventure.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Nonsense. We’ll make a picnic of it. Just you and me… and the ghost that is said to haunt the rings.
ANDROMEDA
You want to go ghost hunting?
CAPTAIN RADIO
Three cargo ships passing through the rings have vanished without a trace. It can’t hurt to take a look.
ANDROMEDA
Alright. But you’d better not make me late for my own wedding.
CAPTAIN RADIO
You have my word.
[The sound of wind.]
ANDROMEDA
Is it just my imagination or is it getting colder?
CAPTAIN RADIO
That’s peculiar. Perhaps the planet’s axis hasn’t fully stabilized yet.
NARRATOR
Captain Radio and Andromeda look out a window over the capital of Alpha Centauri. A tremor runs through the ground as a layer of ice forms over the city.
[A crackling of ice.]
CAPTAIN RADIO
What in all the stars is going on?
OLD MAN
Xavier.
ANDROMEDA
Who is he?
CAPTAIN RADIO
He wasn’t there a moment ago.
[A thud as the man collapses.]
OLD MAN
You are in grave danger.
CAPTAIN RADIO
Try to stay calm.
OLD MAN
Listen to me. You have to stop it.
ANDROMEDA
He’s lost a lot of blood.
OLD MAN
Xavier. I’m you. From the future.
CAPTAIN RADIO
How can that be? I destroyed the Arcadia Crystal. Without it, time travel is impossible.
OLD MAN
All of this has been foretold.
CAPTAIN RADIO
He’s dead. I’m dead.
ANDROMEDA
Looks like the honeymoon will have to wait. Ready to save the world?
CAPTAIN RADIO
Always.
